Lincoln Greenback, What are they worth?
Hello everyone,
I am new to this site. I have an acquaintance that has a Lincoln Greenback that they found in the 1960's. They were cleaning up an old house and found it behind some furniture. My question is this. How much is this worth? It has one visible "flaw" and that is a pigtail on one of the corners. It is definitely real and the serial number on it is in the 40,000 range. If anybody can help me out that would be great. Thanks for any and all suggestions you might have. Regards, Ilikefishes |

Re: Lincoln Greenback, What are they worth?
It's probably a little late for this, but...
There were apparently four types of large US notes first printed in the 1860's, according to the Standard Catalogue of United States Paper Money. They were: 1. Demand notes (Greenbacks as you mention) 2.Legal Tender notes 3. Interest Bearing notes 4. Compound Interest Treasury notes The Demand notes, or Greenbacks were printed in $5, $10, and $20 denominations by the now much esteemed American Bank Note Co., and the National Bank Note Co. They were originally redeemable in coin, although as the Civil War progressed they were discounted in value. However, they were always good as payment for all debts to the government. All of them are quite expensive today. I saw a $5 note for sale recently on the internet listed as F-VF condition for about $3,300. I don't imagine you could buy anything but a rag for less than $1,200 or so. Never have seen one in person that I can recall. |
